BELLES WITH BALLS NL
In 2014, four years after Bonnie was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, she recognized a need to bring awareness of this disease to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, as she knew nothing about Ovarian Cancer before her own diagnosis. With a desire to help those on a similar journey, the Ovarian Cancer Research Education (OCRE) fund at Memorial University was established.
Alana’s beautiful Mom was vibrant and passionate, and by all accounts a very healthy woman. In 2001, at the age of 64, two months after being given a clean bill of health while preparing for her retirement, she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, and, after only 12 weeks of her diagnosis, she lost her battle with this disease. Because of what happened to her mom, Alana’s passion to expose Ovarian Cancer united her with Bonnie to co-chair OCRE in 2017.
Early 2018, to increase fundraising efforts, the OCRE team realized they needed to set up a fundraising arm, and Belles with Balls NL was created. This dedicated and voluntary group of eight women work tirelessly every day to continue to raise monies for Ovarian Cancer research and education, and for other projects that relate to Ovarian Cancer in our Province. In addition to hosting annual Symposiums which educate both the general public and medical personnel with the most up-to-date information about Ovarian Cancer, to date, Belles with Balls NL has raised over $560,000, all of which monies stay in Newfoundland and Labrador. Among the Belles’ donations, they have funded annual MRF Grants at MUN, Masters/PhD students projects involving Ovarian Cancer, and have provided 2 dry labs where medical students/residents can practice their minimally invasive surgery skills. The Belles most recent donation was $100,000 to the Health Care Foundation to purchase a Perfusion Pump for performing HIPEC surgery, another first for our Province.
Belles with Balls NL Team includes: Bonnie Morgan and Alana Walsh-Giovannini (Co-Chairs), Kaitlyn Jarvis, Barbi King, Janice Ryan, Victoria Ryan, Karen Stapleton, Hayley Wilson.
