Graduate Diploma

Qualifications for Admission

To be admitted to the diploma program a student must be eligible to register as a graduate student, as given under the General Regulations governing M.Sc. degrees.  In special circumstances, and upon the recommendation of the Community Health or Clinical Epidemiology Coordinator, a suitable combination of training and professional experience relevant to the program may be acceptable for admission.  

Program Requirements

1. A diploma in Community Health requires successful completion of MED 6200 MED 6220 and MED 6270

2. A diploma in Clinical Epidemiology requires successful completion of MED 6200, MED 6250 and MED 6255

Master of Science in Medicine

Qualifications for Admission

To be considered for admission to the MSc program the minimum requirements will normally be a second class degree from a University of recognized standing.

Master of Health Ethics

Qualifications for Admission
To be considered for admission to the Master of Health Ethics program, the minimum requirements will be:

  • An undergraduate degree from a university of recognized standing with at least a "B+” (75%) average
  • Memorial University English proficiency requirements (the completion of an undergraduate degree at a recognized university where the language of instruction is English or the possession of satisfactory English testing scores)
  • A pre-requisite course: An undergraduate philosophy course with substantial emphasis on moral theory (e.g. an introductory course in moral philosophy)
  • Satisfactory appraisals from two referees
  • A sample of written work in moral theory, bioethics, or ethics more generally construed. This should be a paper submitted for your prerequisite course (described above). This can be inserted into the online application under question 6.

Admission to the Master of Health Ethics program is competitive and not all qualifying applicants are admitted. The Division of Community Health and Humanities reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant.

Program Requirements

  • MED6806 Introduction to the Canadian Health System
  • 3 elective courses (9 credit hours) chosen in consultant with the supervisor/advisor
  • MED6815 Health Ethics Practicum
  • A final project - either:
    • A thesis
    • A capstone project - MED6825 Health Ethics Capstone Project
    • Three health ethics research papers - MED6820 Health Ethics Research Papers

There are special requirements for full-time students who intend to research and write a thesis as a final project. Applicants pursuing the thesis route must secure funding (if wishing to have full-time status). Should funding not be available, the student may choose to study part-time. 

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health is designed to offer a combination of academic and professional training in different areas of public health. Students may choose from one of the following two program streams:

  1. Population/Public Health
  2. Nutrition/Dietetics

Population/Public Health

Qualifications for Admission

To be considered for admission to the Master of Public Health program, the minimum requirements will be:

  • An undergraduate degree from a university of recognized standing with a minimum average of 75% over the last 2 years of full-time study
  • Memorial University English proficiency requirements (the completion of an undergraduate degree at a recognized university where the language of instruction is English or the possession of satisfactory English testing scores)
  • A pre-requisite course: successful completion of a post-secondary level statistics course
  • Satisfactory appraisals from two referees
  • Candidates should also complete the "statement of interest" section on the online application (item #9). Please discuss your interest in the area of public health in this section.

Note: A faculty supervisor is NOT required for this program.

Nutrition/Dietetics

Qualifications for Admission

To be considered for admission to the Master of Public Health program, the minimum requirements will be:

  • Have successfully completed an undergraduate dietetics program accredited by Dietitians of Canada (DC) and provide written verification of same. A downloadable form is available on Dietitians of Canada website.  Please see "Confirmation of Completion of Academic Program" on page 10. 
    NOTE: If you were educated outside Canada, visit the Dietitians of Canada website to find out if or how you can qualify: 
  • Have a minimum academic average of 75% over the last 2 years of full-time study
  • Memorial University English proficiency requirements (the completion of an undergraduate degree at a recognized university where the language of instruction is English or the possession of satisfactory English testing scores)
  • Pre-requisite Course: successful completion of a post-secondary level statistics course
  • Satisfactory appraisals from two referees (at least one appraisal should be academic; the second can be professional)
  • Candidates should also complete the "statement of interest" section on the online application (item #9). Please indicate your interest and possible experience (either as a paid employee or a volunteer) in the area of public health in this section.

Doctor of Philosophy

Qualifications for Admission

To be considered for admission to a Ph.D. program, the minimum requirements will normally be a Master's degree from a University of recognized standing, in an appropriate area of study.

Other students may be considered for admission to a Ph.D. program provided that they have been registered in a Master's program for a minimum of 12 months, and have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Faculty their ability to pursue research at the Doctoral level (see transfer from the MSc to the PhD program in the University Calendar). Such a transfer should take place no later than the 5th semester of the student's MSc program.

Degree Requirements

1. Course requirements will be set on the advice of the supervisory committee.  

2. Each candidate is required to pass a comprehensive examination.

3. Each candidate is required to submit a written dissertation deemed acceptable by the university, and demonstrate their ability to defend their work in a public oral examination.
