Reconciliation event in Health Care

Sep 18th, 2024

Please join us as we witness this important step in our journey toward transformative change.

Reconciliation is about establishing and maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and other Peoples in Canada. Health sectors are working to advance reconciliation through respect and the recognition of rights, cooperation and partnership, and the acknowledgement of harmful policies and practices.

On Sept. 18, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) will take an important step in our journey of reconciliation. At a ceremony in Victoria, British Columbia, on the Traditional Territory of the Lekwungen speaking people of Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, the CMA will apologize for its role, and the role of the medical profession, in the past and ongoing harms caused to First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in the health system.

By offering this apology, the CMA hopes to build trust with and support Indigenous Peoples, communities and organizations and inspire medical learners, physicians, and medical organizations to undertake their own reconciliation journey, professionally, and personally as Canadians.

Physicians and learners are invited to join virtually to share in this important moment. A livestream will be hosted Sept. 18 in Lecture Theatre D between 5:30-7 p.m. (Room opening at 5 p.m.). Please contact Indigenoushealth@mun.ca for information. All are welcome.
