As the only medical school in Newfoundland and Labrador, research that focuses on the need of our communities is a priority. Ground-breaking research has provided important medical discoveries, which have led to improved medical interventions and patient care.

From artificial intelligence to social enterprises and from disinformation to municipal wastewater challenges, Memorial University researchers are helping find answers to complex social issues for people and communities here at home and around the world.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council recently announced results of several of its research grant programs, with 11 Memorial researchers securing $1,081,464 to support diverse projects based in the faculties of Business Administration, Humanities and Social Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Science, as well as the School of Science and the Environment at Grenfell Campus.

A week-long training program at Memorial University proved to be a launchpad for future generations of scientists to build critical health-related research capacity.

Memorial hosted this year’s Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Gender and Health Summer Institute. The theme was benchside breakthroughs to community champions: innovation and implementation of sex and gender+ science.

A major private donation is funding new multiple sclerosis (MS) research at Memorial University.

The Branch Out Neurological Foundation has awarded $723,820 through the Ralph M. Barford Foundation to support research led by Dr. Craig Moore and the late Dr. Michelle Ploughman in the Faculty of Medicine.
