Biography:

Dr. Thavanathan is Sri Lankan in origin, and attended medical school at the University of Sri Lanka, 1968-1973. He received his FRCS (Ed) in 1981. He was Registrar in Surgery in Scunthorpe General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital, UK.

He worked as a general surgeon at Goose Bay, Labrador, 1985-89, and completed two years of further residency training at Memorial University in 1989 and 1991. He has been practicing as a general surgeon in St. John's since 1991.

Dr. Thavanathan has a special interest in hepatobiliary surgery, therapeutic endoscopy and advanced laparoscopic procedures. He wants to make liver resection a much simpler procedure, and likes offering some of his services to the underdeveloped world.
