Dr. Susan Avery joined the Discipline of Family Medicine as an Assistant Professor in September 2012. In 2022, she attained the title of Associate Professor and became a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Avery helped build the low-risk, family medicine-obstetrical (FM-OBS) group, Family Centered Maternity Care (FCMC), the only group of family physicians providing intrapartum training to medical learners and care to patients on the Avalon. Accordingly, she is cross-appointed to the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynecology and also has research interests in the provision of FM-OBS training and patient care. Dr. Avery is Memorial’s Family Medicine Residency Training Program’s Curriculum Chair, leading and collaborating with colleagues to ensure residents are exposed to a comprehensive curriculum centered in family medicine.

Dr. Avery grew up in Stephenville, NL and completed her medical education and family medicine residency training at Memorial in 2009 and 2011 respectively. She earned a Master’s degree in Education – Post Secondary Studies from Memorial in 2024. Dr. Avery is the clinical lead at the Shea Heights Community Medical Clinic. She has full scope family medicine practice and special interests in FM-OBS, chronic pain, and opioid agonist therapy.
