High Fidelity Simulation
Contained within the Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC) is the High Fidelity Simulation unit. High Fidelity Simulation is a methodology of healthcare education that utilizes patient simulators or life-like manikins. Most high fidelity manikins have features such as the capability to breathe with chest rise, have breath and heart sounds, have palpable pulses, and can open and close their eyes. These manikins can be connected to bedside monitors that display a variety of measures such as heart rate, EKG rhythm, blood pressure and blood oxygen level. Additionally, the manikins can be used for skill practice such as defibrillation, bag-mask ventilation and intubation. The CLSC has several high fidelity manikins including babies, children and adults (including a birthing simulator).
The High Fidelity Simulation unit in the CLSC consists of four simulation suites equipped with video and audio capturing capability. Each suite has its own control room with a two-way mirror to facilitate scenario delivery. These suites are set up to allow healthcare professionals to learn in a realistic, controlled environment that is free from distraction – a place where they are safe to improve on their knowledge and skills. There are also two fully equipped debrief rooms with A/V technology allowing for real time video playback to facilitate debriefing and group learning.
In high fidelity simulation, typically learners work through scenarios as a team and are required to use their critical judgment, apply what they have learned and demonstrate how to effectively care for the patient in a proficient manner.
Clinic Rooms
Like a hospital, all of the CLSC’s 20 multipurpose examination rooms are equipped with a diagnostic headwall featuring blood pressure cuffs, otoscope, ophthalmoscope and thermometer. Each room is also equipped with high-fidelity video cameras with real-time playback capability to facilitate evaluations and debriefing.
Surgical Skills Classroom
The Surgical Skills Suite is a state-of-the-art facility designed to teach and assess surgical skills to medical students, residents and healthcare professionals. The instruction provides hands on training and guidance on various surgical technique and procedures. This instruction demonstrates the proper use of surgical instrumentation and equipment utilizing task trainers simulation models. Both formative and summative evaluation occurs collaborating with faculty. Surgical skill classroom suite allows for audio and video recording to aid in debriefing students, offering feedback and assessment of performance.
General materials are available for use in any part of the CLSC: linens, gloves, pillows, bedside tissues, surgical masks, tongue depressors.
