Transfusion Camp

Transfusion Camp is a national program (Canadian Blood Services and University of Toronto) that is designed to provide residents (PGY2 and above) with a comprehensive overview of transfusion medicine. Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine will offer the camp for a second year in 2025-2026.  There are four sessions that are delivered synchronously for residents from participating Memorial University postgraduate training programs. Each day will include virtual lectures and team-based seminars.

Dates for 2025-2026:

  • Blood Components and Product Indications Day 1 – September 19, 2025
  • Transfusion Reactions and Sickle Cell Disease Day 2 – November 28, 2025
  • Perioperative and Bleeding Management Day 3 – January 30, 2026
  • Massive Hemorrhage Protocols and Review Day 4 – March 27, 2026

Announcement: Memorial’s Involvement in the Transfusion Camp

We are pleased to share an update on Memorial University’s participation in the Transfusion Camp program.

2025–2026 Update

 *   This year, 22 residents are enrolled.

 *   Participation spans five programs: Anesthesia, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to faculty and residents for their strong engagement with the camp. Special thanks to Dr. Brian Harnett and Dr. Tom Dunne for facilitating our local seminars in collaboration with Dalhousie University.


2024–2025 Highlights

*   Memorial officially joined the program.

*   11 residents from Anesthesia and Laboratory Medicine participated.

*   Attendance was exceptional (>90%), surpassing the national average.

*   The Transfusion Camp national report showed a significant improvement in resident knowledge, with scores rising from 58% pre-camp to 83% post-camp.

*   Importantly, 72% of residents reported applying this knowledge in their current practice.
