Yordan Karaivanov

For the last 23 years Dr. Yordan Karaivanov has been practicing in Labrador, where he provides comprehensive care to his patients — most of whom are Indigenous. At one point he was the family physician of five generations of one family.
Dr. Karaivanov is associate professor of medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
His areas of research include diabetes care for Indigenous people, suicide and increasing the capacity of rural practices for resident research.
Dr. Karaivanov served as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association and as board member of the Canadian Medical Association and the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Currently, he is Division Chief of Patient Safety and Quality of Care at NL Health Services and sits on the council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador.
