Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University.

I am extremely proud to be the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial. I took on the role of Dean as of August 15, 2016 and during that time I have had the pleasure of seeing many wonderful changes in the faculty as well as witness exciting innovative initiatives, world class research, exceptional education and significant accomplishments by our learners, staff and faculty.

Since 2016, we have celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine, had our first successful fundraising campaign, launched our exciting strategic plan Destination Excellence, and strengthened and developed partnerships with many community stakeholders.

The Faculty of Medicine has two Divisions (Biomedical Sciences, and Community Health and Humanities) and 12 Disciplines - Anesthesiology, Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Genetics, Laboratory Medicine, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery. As well as educational programs and several support units including Health Sciences Information and Media Services (HSIMS), marketing and communications, alumni affairs and development, Medical Laboratories, Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC) which ensure that the academic mission is being realized.

Our vision is “Through excellence, we will integrate education, research and social accountability to advance the health of the people and communities we serve.” Through our strategic planning implementation team (DEIST) we have prioritized: mentorship, wellness, research, social accountability, and key areas across the continuum of education including: review of the undergraduate medical education curriculum, introduction of competency based medical education in postgraduate education, development of innovative continuing professional education offerings online and in person, and increasing involvement of the graduate students in the faculty of medicine community. We are also focusing on empowering our people and ensuring a safe, respectful learning and work environment.

We are excited about the things happening to achieve our goals of thriving learners and graduates, impactful research and healthier communities. We are committed to the people and communities we serve.

Please explore our website and we welcome opportunities to hear from our learners, staff, faculty, alumni and community partners.

Sincerely,

Dr. Margaret Steele
