As the only medical school in Newfoundland and Labrador, research that focuses on the need of our communities is a priority. The inspiring words from iconic Canadian athlete and cancer research activist Terry Fox ring true now more than ever.

They also motivate a group of Memorial University researchers and partner institutions working together as the Atlantic Cancer Consortium.

About 45 per cent of Canadians are expected to develop cancer during our lifetimes, with about 247,100 new cases expected this year.

That’s about 676 new diagnoses every day.

A Memorial University student is a 2024 recipient of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award.

Parsa Abdi is a third-year medical student in the Faculty of Medicine.
