About
Grenfell’s Master of Applied Literary Arts (MALA) program can help you turn your creativity into a career.
The creative economy in Newfoundland and Labrador is thriving, and it needs professionals to lead it. MALA is the first master's program in Canada designed to blend advanced cultural and academic studies with hands-on, flexible professional training.
This isn't your typical lecture-heavy grad program. MALA takes you off campus and into the thriving Newfoundland and Labrador arts community to collaborate directly with local artists, professional creators, businesses, and cultural leaders. You'll graduate with a resume-ready toolkit, prepared to shape our creative future—whether that means diversifying our stories, decolonizing cultural spaces, or driving sustainable arts and tourism economies here and beyond.
What you’ll master:
- Publishing & Events: Editing, publishing, festival planning, and grant writing.
- Creative Production: Writing, producing, and anthologizing original creative works.
- Arts Management: Archival work, information management, and curatorial knowledge.
- Theatre & Tourism: Hands-on skills in theatre production and cultural tourism.
