The Grenfilm Society

The Grenfilm Society is a campus-based film society that hosts free community screenings, production workshops, and social events focused on film and moving image media. Our screenings showcase innovative, experimental, socially-engaged, and boundary-pushing cinema from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and around the world. Events are open to students, the Grenfell community, and the wider public.

Founded in winter 2020 by Dr. Johnathan Pope (English), the Grenfilm Society is run by Grenfell students and faculty advisor Dr. Rachel W. Jekanowski (English & Historical Studies). The organization seeks to bridge academic film studies, fan cultures, and Corner Brook's film and arts community. Our monthly events are held throughout the year on campus and with partner organizations, including the Rotary Arts Centre, the Centre for Research and Innovation, and the GCSU Backlot.

Past events include on-campus screenings curated by Grenfell students; the Made Right Here festival of Newfoundland short films co-hosted with the Rotary Arts Centre; the "Screening Labrador" series and book launch; a special screening of Metropolis (1927) with live musical score; introductory filmmaking workshops; film trivia at the GCSU Backlot; and a physical media swap.
