“Alexander’s Archers”

While the study of Alexander’s army is extensively discussed in scholarship there has been no study devoted to either archery in Macedonia or archers as a military unit in Alexander’s army. My objective is to illuminate as much as possible the role of archers in set battles, sieges, and guerilla warfare as a unit(s) in the use of combined arms: Where do archers fit into the deployment? At what point during sieges and battles are they utilized? What is their level of success? What are the changes to their numbers and composition during Alexander’s eastern expedition (334-323 BCE)?
