Belize Travel Award

Belize Travel Award Application
This award, valued at a minimum of $1000 annually for study in Belize, has been established by Dr. Michael Newton. This award is open to students enrolled at the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland who wish to gain international experience by doing university or field courses in Belize. Students should be beyond their first year of study, meet the minimum academic requirements of clear standing and be recommended by the faculty in their area of study. The award will be made by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the scholarship committee at Grenfell Campus in consultation with faculty.
Communities Building Youth Futures Award

YMCA - Communities Building Youth Futures Award
This Award was established by a generous donation from the YMCA of Western Newfoundland to recognize and reward students for their unique talents, experiences, and contributions, beyond traditional academic achievements. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their potential for success and make a positive impact on their communities and the world. Valued at $1,000, it will be granted annually to a full-time or part-time student in any program at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Grenfell Campus who exemplifies qualities from one of the following categories:
- Personal Growth and Overcoming Adversity- Students who face significant challenges and how they have overcome them, highlighting their resilience and determination.
- Innovation and Problem-Solving Skills: Students who have demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through projects, inventions, or initiatives addressing real-world problems.
- Dedication to a Cause: Students who have shown a deep commitment to a particular cause or social issue, such as environmental conservation, human rights, or mental health awareness.
The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This Award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Grenfell Scholarship Committee. An application is required and can be obtained from the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Office.
Kathryn Maroun Award in Honour of Mother Earth

Kathryn Maroun Award in Honour of Mother Earth 2024
This award was established by a generous donation from the Maroun Family. Valued at $5,000 annually, this award will be granted to an Indigenous undergraduate or graduate student who has completed at least one semester of study at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, who best answers the following questions by application in the form of a two-page essay or a five-minute video:
- What have you done in your lifetime for the environment in your neighbourhood (broadly defined)?
- What can be done to improve the environment in your neighbourhood?
- What would you do with twenty hours of community service to improve the environment in your neighbourhood?
The award will be granted by the Vice President (Grenfell Campus) on the recommendation of the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Committee.
Grenfell Campus Sustainability Award

Grenfell Campus Sustainability Award 2024
This Award was established by Dr. Gabriela Sabau to recognize a Grenfell Campus undergraduate or graduate student who is making a difference at Grenfell Campus through efforts to enhance Grenfell as an environmentally sustainable campus. Valued at $1,000 per year the award will be awarded to a student in any year of study in any program at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an Award as defined by the university. The Award will be presented by the Dean of Science and the Environment on the recommendation of the School of Science and Environment Scholarship Committee.
Corner Brook Plaza Grenfell Campus Scholarship

Corner Brook Plaza Scholarship 2024
This Scholarship was generously established by the administration of Corner Brook Plaza Shopping Centre to recognize a Grenfell Campus undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in second year or above of any program of study who demonstrates by application a commitment to their community through volunteerism. Application to include letter from the applicant and a letter of reference from a professor, teacher or community organization. Valued at $2,550 per year, the scholarship will be awarded to a full time student enrolled at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland. The recipient must apply for this scholarship and must meet the minimum academic requirements for a Scholarship as defined by the university. The Scholarship, along with a plaque, will be awarded by the Vice-President, Grenfell Campus on the recommendation of the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Committee.
The Marina Bennett Butler Mi'kmaw Nursing Award
(Deadline: Oct. 15)
This award, valued at $1,000.00 annually, was created by the family of Marina Bennett Butler with the support of friends and community members. Marina Bennett Butler was a Mi’kmaw woman and a Registered Nurse. She attended nursing school in the 1950s in New Brunswick because there was no training option in her home area on the west coast of Newfoundland. She then returned to the west coast, where she acted as both a nurse and midwife, delivering babies in homes as well as at the cottage hospital at Stephenville Crossing. Over the course of her nursing career, Marina was a licensed RN in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as several U.S. states. In the final couple years of her life, she lived in an Alzheimer’s facility where the staff referred to her endearingly as Nurse Marina. The award will be presented annually to a current WRSON undergraduate Mi’kmaw student from Newfoundland and Labrador (status or non-status). The recipient must be in clear standing, as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. The applicant must also include a statement of interest not to exceed 250 words, and evidence of identification as Newfoundland Mi’kmaw (letter from a band council, community elder, copy of SCIS card, etc).
Grenfell Campus Belize Award
(Deadline: Oct. 15)
This award was initiated by Dr. Michael Newton who has been working with Grenfell Campus in its recruitment efforts in Belize for more that fifteen years. Valued at $1,000 annually, the award will be provided to any Belizean undergraduate student enrolled at Grenfell Campus in a Grenfell degree program who demonstrates an excellent academic record and a commitment to the Grenfell Campus or Corner Brook community through volunteer work. Students must apply using the attached application and submit one letter of reference no later than November 9. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an Award as defined by the university. The Award will be presented by the Dean of the School of Arts and Social Science on the recommendation of the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Committee.
The Hebron Women in Science and Engineering Scholarship

Hebron Women in Science and Engineering Scholarship 2024
This scholarship program was created by a generous contribution from the Hebron Project. The Hebron Project co-venturers are ExxonMobil Canada Properties (operator), Chevron Canada, Suncor Energy, Statoil Canada and Nalcor Energy. Scholarships will be awarded to female students who are enrolled in full-time or part-time studies at any campus of Memorial University who are majoring in engineering, the geosciences, environmental science or chemistry. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. Where possible at least one scholarship will be awarded to a student in her first year of study. For students at the St. John’s or Grenfell Campus the awards will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards upon recommendation of the appropriate dean or department head.
Hebron Diversity Award

This award was created from a generous contribution from the Hebron Project. The Hebron Project co-venturers are ExxonMobil Canada Properties (operator), Chevron Canada, Suncor Energy, Statoil Canada and Nalcor Energy. Awards will be available to full-time or part-time students, enrolled at any campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, who have aboriginal status, a disability, or who represent a visible minority. Students with a disability should provide supporting documentation (from a medical doctor, psychologist, audiologist, rehabilitation counselor, or other professional who has specific training, expertise, and experience in the diagnosis of this condition). Students will claim aboriginal and visible minority status through self-identification. Of those eligible students, further preference will be given to students who are majoring in engineering, the geosciences, environmental science or chemistry. Normally, at least one award will be granted in each designated area and where possible, at least one award will be granted to a student in his/her first year of study. For students at the St. John’s or Grenfell Campus the awards will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards upon the recommendation of the appropriate dean or department head.
The Katy Bindon Scholarship

The Katy Bindon Scholarship Application - 2024
This scholarship, one or more valued at $1,000.00 each annually, was created by friends of Dr. Katy Bindon with the assistance of the local branch of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Alumni Association and colleagues at Grenfell Campus. It was created to mark the contribution that Dr. Bindon made at the college during her tenure as its principal from 1991-1997. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student entering his or her fourth year in any degree program offered at Grenfell Campus. The recipient should have combined academic excellence with an outstanding contribution to student life. The scholarship is to be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee at Grenfell Campus.
Edward P. Browne Scholarship

Edward Browne Scholarship 2024
This scholarship was established by individual members of faculty, staff and student body of Grenfell Campus in memory of the late Edward P. Browne. Professor Browne was co-coordinator of physical education and recreation at Grenfell Campus from its opening until his death in 1982. The scholarship is open to all full-time students who have spent at least two semesters at Grenfell Campus. It is awarded on the basis of academic standing, participation in campus life and may include financial need. The award will be made by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on recommendation from the Grenfell Campus. The value of the award will be determined from the interest accrued on the principal sum donated.
Dr. Wynanne Downer Award for Women

This award was established by the Canadian Federation of University Women, Corner Brook Club, in memory of Dr. Wynanne Downer who was a founding member. Valued at a portion of the income on the investment, it will be awarded annually to a female student who attended a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and who is pursuing a degree at the Grenfell Campus. Preference will be given to a female student who entered university as a mature student (twenty-one years or older) and is beyond her first year of studies. Financial need may be taken into consideration. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. The award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee, Grenfell Campus.
The Environmental Science Merit Scholarship

Environmental Science Merit Award 2024
One merit scholarship, valued at $2,500.00 annually will be awarded to an outstanding student entering the fourth year of the environmental science program at Grenfell Campus. It will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the basis of scholarship standing and a recommendation from the Chair of Environmental Science, Grenfell Campus.
The Dr. John Ashton Travel Award
(Deadline: Oct. 15)
This award was established by his wife Sheila and son Darby through generous contributions made in his memory by his family, friends and colleagues. John Ashton was the principal of Grenfell from 2005 until his passing in 2008. He was a pivotal figure in the evolution of Grenfell and was also an internationally recognized, prize-winning scholar in his chosen field of folklore. Valued at a portion of the income on the investment, the award will be given annually to an undergraduate student at Grenfell Campus who meets the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland and wishes to travel for academic purposes. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need and/or who is facing other barriers, such as a disability, for which the funding would help to overcome obstacles to participate in academic travel opportunities. The award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the collective recommendation of the Dean, Grenfell Campus.
Gerald Dawe Scholarship in Business Administration

This scholarship was established in honour of Gerald Dawe by his four daughters. Mr. Dawe was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland in 1938 and is the retired President of Stan Dawe Ltd. For over 50 years, Mr. Dawe built and managed a successful building supplies business in western and central Newfoundland. He believes a successful business requires hard work, integrity, and respect for people, including employees, customers and the broader community. Valued at $500, this scholarship will be awarded to a student with the highest average in BUSN required courses and in year three of the Bachelor of Business Administration program at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus. Preference will be given to a student who can demonstrate leadership, personal integrity, and strong work ethic. Preference will also be given to a student who has graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Grenfell Campus, Memorial University. An application is required. In 250 words, describe your thoughts, please provide personal examples, on the qualities of leadership, integrity, and respect, as valued by Mr. Dawe.
Wareham Family Entrepreneurship Award

This award was established by a generous donation from the Wareham Family to recognize students from Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Grenfell Campus, who have a recognized interest in entrepreneurship. Valued at $5,000, this award will be granted annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who has completed a minimum of half of their degree program requirements in any degree program at the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University. The student will have demonstrated an entrepreneurial mindset and the leadership qualities associated with entrepreneurial success. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University. For an undergraduate student, the award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards. For a graduate student, the award will be granted by the Associate Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies, Grenfell Campus. In both cases the award will be granted on the recommendation of the Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Grenfell Campus. An application is required. In 250 words, outline your entrepreneurial endeavours and detail the leadership qualities you believe are essential to entrepreneurial success.
Manuel & Shiu Kuen Lam Costa Rica Travel Award

Manuel & Shiu Kuen Lam Costa Rica Travel Award 2024
This award was established by a generous donation from the Estate of Dr. Jose Lam, in honour of his parents Manuel & Shiu Kuen Lam. Dr. Lam was an exceptional teacher and scholar, admired across the Grenfell Campus and in the community. He was instrumental in bringing international students to the Grenfell campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland and providing domestic students with a more global perspective. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, it will be awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time in any program of study at the Grenfell or St. John's campus of Memorial University who is traveling to Costa Rica for experiential learning. Preference will be given to students attending Grenfell campus. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University. An application is required for this award. In the case of an undergraduate recipient, it will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards and in the case of a graduate recipient, it will be granted by the Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Dean, Graduate Studies, both on the recommendation of the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Committee.
Patricia Blackburn Memorial Bursary Fund

Patricia Blackburn Memorial Bursary Fund 2024
This fund was established at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, in memory of Patricia Blackburn and her grandson Erik Blackburn. The annual income is to be used at the discretion of the Vice-President to facilitate or improve the educational opportunities of deserving young people from rural Newfoundland and Labrador. The fund will assist a promising student who would otherwise be unable to attend or continue university. An application is required.
Student Community Leadership Awards
The Student Community Leadership Awards will be given in winter 2025 to two students who have contributed to a sense of community at Grenfell Campus and who have demonstrated innovation and leadership in their approach to community-building, particularly through volunteer initiatives. This year's awards will be valued at $1000 for a study-permit holding student (to reflect their higher tuition) and a $500 award for a student who is Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident who has demonstrated a strong sense of allyship with our international student population. Furthermore, the Community Member Award will be given to a member of the Corner Brook community who works and supports the welfare of our international students. The Dr. G.A. Frecker Memorial Alumni Bursaries
The Memorial University of Newfoundland Alumni Association has established, from its annual fund, five bursaries named in honour of the late Dr. G.A. Frecker, chancellor, Memorial University of Newfoundland, 1971-79, and valued at $500.00 each. Four of the bursaries are tenable at the St. John's campus and one at the Grenfell Campus at Corner Brook. The bursaries will be awarded annually to full-time students in any faculty or year on the basis of academic standing and financial need.
Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Residence Scholarship
This scholarship, valued at $500.00, is available to a student who has spent at least two semesters in residence at the Grenfell Campus. Academic performance and contribution to college life will be the main criteria for choosing the recipient. The scholarship is awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards upon recommendation from the Scholarship Committee at Grenfell Campus.
Grenfell Campus Scholarship Fund
Funds are available for the purpose of providing scholarships to students at Grenfell Campus. The scholarships will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards upon the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee at the Grenfell Campus. Financial need may be taken into account when making the awards.
The Olof Lindgren Scholarship
This scholarship, the value of which will be determined by the annual interest accrued, is supported by a fund established by Dr. Orvil Olsen, a former Professor of Biology at Grenfell Campus, in memory of his grandfather Olof Lindgren, a Saskatchewan pioneer farmer, who was a firm believer in the value of education as a means of enhancing the quality of life. It is awarded to a student who has completed at least two years at Grenfell Campus and plans to proceed with the full degree on that Campus. In awarding the scholarship, preference will be given to a student who has shown an interest in both the natural and physical sciences, and the arts. This award is based upon academic excellence. This scholarship is awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee at Grenfell Campus.
Moving Forward Together Campaign Award
This Award was established by two generous donations as a part of the Moving Forward Together Campaign by the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland and the Presentation Sisters of Newfoundland and Labrador. Moving Forward Together is a Canada-wide campaign to bring fundamental and lasting change to Aboriginal communities in Canada by supporting healing and educational programs. Valued at $1,800, it will be awarded to an undergraduate Aboriginal student beyond their first year of studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. There will be one award annually at each of the St. John’s and Grenfell campuses. The award is renewable for an additional two years. The student must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards. An application is required when the application period is still open (application period usually opens in July) at the Scholarships and Awards Office website at www.mun.ca/scholarships.
The Florence O'Neill Scholarships
An endowment donated to the University by Florence O'Neill, Ed.D., C.M., LL.D., honorary graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland, distinguished for her contribution to the fields of adult education and community development, will fund annual scholarships valued up to $1,000.00 each. These awards will be made available to full-time undergraduate students, preferably to those from rural Newfoundland and Labrador, on the basis of scholarship standing. One shall be given annually to a student attending the Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook.
The C.F. Poole Scholarship
This scholarship was established from funds donated by friends of Dr. Cyril F. Poole on the occasion of his retirement as principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Dr. Poole, a native of Pilley's Island, Notre Dame Bay, was committed to excellence throughout his distinguished career as a university teacher and administrator in several Canadian universities including Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, where he served as principal from 1977 to 1990. The scholarship honouring his contribution to excellence in education will be awarded annually to a Grenfell Campus student of outstanding academic merit and promise. Valued at approximately $1,000.00, it will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on recommendation from Grenfell Campus.
W. Gary Rowe, QC Scholarship at Grenfell Campus
This undergraduate scholarship was established through a generous gift from the estate of the late W. Gary Rowe, QC (1944-2010), lawyer, art collector and philanthropist. Mr. Rowe graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Laws degree before being called to the bar in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1970. In 1972 he was a founding partner of the firm Chalker, Green and Rowe, which grew to become one of the largest in St. John’s with more than 20 lawyers at the time of its merger with the regional firm McInnes Cooper in 2000. Mr. Rowe was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988. One or more scholarships will be awarded annually to a student(s) enrolled in any program or year of study at the Grenfell Campus . The recipient must have graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and meet the academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the university. This scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Scholarships Committee, Grenfell Campus.
The Honourable P. Lloyd and Elizabeth Soper Scholarship
This scholarship is provided from a fund established by the Honourable P. Lloyd and Elizabeth Soper. It will be awarded to a student at Grenfell Campus who has completed his or her first year of studies and is continuing as a full-time student at the campus for the second year. The scholarship, valued at a minimum of $1000.00, will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the basis of scholarship standing and upon the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee at Grenfell Campus.
