For Parents
Grenfell’ Campus’s greatest advantage is the strong connections students build with faculty and staff. It’s a common sight to see Campus Enforcement and Patrol officers joining students for lunch, or professors chatting with them in the halls. Students here aren’t just attending university- they become part of our community.
Helping your child adjust
University is a big transition. As students move through their first semester, there will likely be a mix of emotions. Excitement, nervousness, loneliness, and anxiety are all normal parts of starting something new. Grenfell prides itself on creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where students feel supported as they adjust to their new independence.
Studying in a small university has many advantages. Class sizes are smaller and more engaging inviting active participation and discussion. Our students get rare opportunities for research and chances to work with their professors, normally only seen in grad school.
Making the most of time on campus
The university experience is much more than just academics. Getting involved on campus will allow students connect with new friends, contribute to the Grenfell community and develop marketable skills for the future.
Orientation is a great way to make friends and to learn what resources and supports are available.
There are plenty of ways to get involved:
- Athletics: Students can continue playing basketball or volleyball with our Grenfell Warriors
- Recreation: Our recreation programs help students stay active and have fun. The new Marina Redmond Centrefeatures an aquatic centre, gym, and fitness room with state-of-the-art facilities available to all students.
- Clubs and Societies: From student government to film, history, and equity-seeking groups, there’s something for every interest.
Academic Prep Week (APW)
Taking place during the week before classes, APW equips new students with the skills needed to start their university degree on the right footing. Participants learn how to better study, handle the work load, manage their time, and become familiar with campus and all our resources. It’s also a great way to ease and discomfort before classes begin and meet people.
Support network for students
We care about student well-being. Counselling and Psychological Services provide quick access to a counsellor or psychologist, along with programs on stress management and mental wellness.
The Learning Centre offers free tutoring to students in many course subjects, one-on-one math and writing help, and peer tutoring available upon request (when tutors are available.)
The Accessibility Centre for Educational Support (ACES) ensures that students with disabilities or exceptionalities have the tools and accommodations to be equipped to succeed.
Living on campus
Students who live in one of our residences are choosing safety and security. In addition to the regular rotations from campus enforcement, there are student staff living in each area tasked with helping students be comfortable in their environment.
Whether it is apartment-style chalet or traditional residence, each student will have their own private bedroom, and a bathroom (shared with one other person). Students can purchase food in The Grove dining Hall (optional meal plan) or prepare their own meals and snacks in convenient communal kitchen.
Living in Corner Brook
Corner Brook is a small city of about 30,000- offering all the amenities of an urban areas with a small- town feel. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering extensive walking, hiking and biking trails, as well as world-class downhill and cross-country ski facilities. It is an incredibly scenic part of the world year-round. There are shopping areas, restaurants and night life venues.
Corner Brook is located about 300 kilometers from the ferry to Nova Scotia and 60 kilometers from the Deer Lake Regional Airport.
International students
Specific programming is available for students who are new to Canada to help ease the transition, and to learn about their new home. Our international student population is active and tremendous contributors to the campus and greater community. Our certified immigration advisor is here to help guide students through immigration regulations.
Financing and scholarships
Many students receive scholarships to help finance their education. Scholarships are not only rewarded for strong academics, but also to students who meet certain criteria or have an exceptional need. In fact, some scholarships are not rewarded because there are no applicants! Memorial’s Transforming Your Horizons scholarships are given out to first year students automatically based on high school grades.
There are many on-campus jobs available to students that not only help earn income, but may help them gain real experience in their field of study.
Students from Newfoundland and Labrador may also qualify for the provincial student aid program, which offers more support than many expect.
