Skill Development Support

The Accessibility Centre and Education Support (ACES) unit offers Skill Development Support for students registered with our office. ACES is committed assisting students with disabilities and exceptionalities with building skills. The following programs are available for students to enroll in:

Individual Support:

1. Time Management Skill Development

Many students struggle with Time Management. In ACES, we offer individualized time management programming which allows you to plan your semester, keep track of important deadlines, stay on task with work throughout the semester, schedule your time weekly, and build necessary time management skills to foster independence. If you are registered with the ACES unit and find yourself struggling with time management, you can contact gcaces@mun.ca to book an appointment. 

2. Assistive Technology facilitated by ACES Staff:

ACES Staff are available to meet with students and discuss and provide brief tutorials on various types of assistive technology available through our office. If you are registered with the ACES unit and are looking for assistive technology support, you can contact gcaces@mun.ca to book an appointment. 

Group Support:

We attempt to offer these groups on a semesterly basis; however, offerings are dependent on personnel availability.

1. Coping with Life (DBT Skills) Group facilitated by Dr. Veronica Hutchings (R. Psych):

Counselling & Psychological Service’s psychologist Dr. Veronica Hutchings, with support from the Learning Centre offers a 4-week group to assist students to cope with life as we navigate through an academic semester. Participants will learn dialectical behaviour skills to help them stay in the moment, regulate their emotions, tolerate distress, and communicate more effectively. 2. Anxiety Group facilitated by Jennifer Broadbent (CCC):

Counselling & Psychological Service’s counsellor Jennifer Broadbent, with support from the Learning Centre offers a 5-week group to help students with anxiety and to learn coping skills.  It will be open to a maximum of 10 people on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will run for 5 consecutive weeks. 3. The Academic Success Centre facilitated by Memorial University, St. John’s Campus:

The Academic Success Centre provides group sessions on various topics related to skill development. For more information, you can visit the Academic Success Centre website. 

4. Assistive Technology facilitated by ACES Staff:

ACES hosts a number of sessions during the academic year focusing of various types of assistive technology. Students will be notified about upcoming group sessions through email.
