We hope you will take advantage of the full day we have planned; however, if you can only make a portion of the day, that is okay too. DESCRIPTION: In this interactive and "ribbiting" session, participants will dive into the world of frog vocalizations, learning how to identify different species based on their unique ribbits, croaks, and trills. Participants will develop some of the important animal survey skills that biology-stream students in our Environmental Science and General Science programs learn as part of their coursework. By the end of the session, participants will be able to "listen to the night" and identify frog species without ever seeing them!

The Grenfell Campus Let's Talk Science site is open to all Grenfell science students, and allows them to connect with local children and their families to explore exciting scientific ideas. Student volunteers go on classroom visits to local elementary schools and participate in large events, such as Grenfell Campus Tricks and Treats, and the Grenfell Campus Let's Talk Science Challenge. Through this session, participants will learn how they can access this rewarding volunteer opportunity, and will feel inspired and ready to be part of a team that brings science to life!

Visualizing Life in the Ancient World

DESCRIPTION: Grenfell students will present in-class projects consisting of a five-minute description of a topic and a visual representation they have created to illustrate it: 1) healing sanctuaries in ancient Greece and 2) marriage in ancient Greece. The students and professor are prepared to answer audience questions on the course and program as well as the two 'visual' topics.

DESCRIPTION: In this session we will look at the role the Visual Arts (either as Art, Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Gaming, Performance, etc.) play in society and the role of the art historian/visual culturalist in analyzing these areas from a variety of perspectives. The talk will show how having this unique form of visual literacy is a key critical educational need, and interpretative skill, in the period of mass media and social media (plus we will look at the wide variety of jobs the visual arts and creative industries generate, busting the myth there is "no work" in art).

DESCRIPTION: Students who head to Grenfell Campus for the first time next August or September might feel like Everything has Changed, but so might the major support people in their lives. Parents/guardian/support people are welcome to join campus psychologist, Dr. Veronica Hutchings, to discuss changes that family members may experience, how best to Tolerate it, and also learn how to support students from afar without seeing Red.
Indigenous Student Lounge, AS2027

11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. - Student Danielle Hoven will lead a smudge in the Indigenous Student Lounge. Smudging is a First Nations purification ceremony involving the lighting of sacred plans such as sage, sweetgrass, tobacco, or cedar.
1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. - Student Danielle Hoven will demonstrate the game of Waltes in the Indigenous Student Lounge. Waltes is a traditional Mi’kmaw bowl and dice game and was often played during ceremonies, social events, and community gatherings.

Indigenous Resource Centre, AS278

Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland is located in traditional Mi'kmaw territory. The Indigenous Resource Centre provides supports and services to more than 300 Indigenous students on campus. Programs and services include the Grenfell Campus Student Union Indigenous Caucus, drop-in smudging, Indigenous Peer Mentorship program, Indigenous Resource library, a variety of events such as an annual powwow and the annual Indigenous Peoples Week, designated seats programs, housing agreements for Nunatsiavut beneficiaries, and culturally safe spaces for students to practice smudging and Kullik/Qulliq lighting.

Check out our language lab and talk to Michelle Park (French Lab Instructor) and Nathalie Pender (French professor) about taking French courses at university. You may want to consider taking a French minor as part of your degree or taking a couple of French courses as electives.
Chemistry Lab, AS 3012
10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. AND 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Our chemistry lab staff will chat with you about the safety equipment used in a laboratory to mitigate fires, spills, and toxic fumes and will show you a vacuum rotor evaporator distilling chemical solvents.
Note: The laboratory cannot accommodate large groups (maximum 20 people at a time)

School of Fine Arts Balcony (second floor, Fine Arts building)
Visit the School of Fine Arts Balcony to take in the view of the City or look at the balcony from below to enjoy the newly installed artwork that greets people as they enter the School of Fine Arts. The balcony is now adorned with a significant piece of art by visual artist Melissa Tremblett. Tremblett is of Innu and English heritage from the community of Sheshatshiu, Labrador, and is currently based in Elmastukwek, Ktaqmkuk territory (Bay of Islands, Western Newfoundland). Tremblett graduated with a bachelor of fine arts, visual arts (2015) from the Grenfell Campus and a bachelor of science, behavioural neuroscience (2011), from Memorial University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and abroad.

Join Gallery Director Jane Walker for a guided tour of the gallery exhibition, The Body Draws Itself, by Zachari Logan. Jane will speak about the history of the art gallery at Memorial University and the role the Grenfell Art Gallery plays in the School of Fine Arts, the region, and in the province.
