Profile
Galagedara is a leading researcher in sustainable land and water resources management, with a strong focus on agriculture, water security, and food security. His expertise spans hydrogeophysics—applying non-invasive geophysical methods to near-surface hydrology; hydrology—studying processes from pedon to watershed scales; hydrological modeling—assessing climate change impacts on land, water, and food security; and agrophysics—evaluating the effects of best management practices on soil properties. He began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, later becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2004. Since joining Grenfell Campus in 2014, he has established a thriving research program, fostering collaborations across Memorial University’s campuses and internationally. His prolific contributions include over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles, 34 peer-reviewed conference papers, and more than 130 conference abstracts. He has secured over $30 million in research funding and mentored over 100 undergraduate and graduate students, including more than 50 in the past seven years. Dr. Galagedara’s research addresses one of today’s most pressing global challenges: ensuring water and food security amid climate change and increasing pressure on natural resources. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to develop sustainable land and water management strategies while balancing economic efficiency, social equity, and ecosystem sustainability.
