Language requirements

Regardless of your nationality or immigration status, the MER requires a higher English proficiency requirement than baseline, as noted on https://www.mun.ca/become/graduate/apply/. You can use one of the following methods to prove your English proficiency:

  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) – completing either (a) secondary school or (b) a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree, from a recognized English-medium school/university/institution. If you completed this outside Canada or the United States, you can provide proof in the form of a medium of instruction letter (or similar document) from that school/university/institution.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – a minimum aggregate score of 92 on the old TOEFL 0-100 scale, or 4.5 on the new TOEFL 1-6 scale.
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS Academic) – a minimum average band score of 7.0.
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) – a minimum aggregate score of 125.
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) – a minimum score of between 50 and 60 in each of the four bands, with at least 2 band scores of 60.
  • Michigan English Test (MET) – a minimum score of 59%.
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE-Academic): minimum scores of 58.
  • Intensive English Program at Grenfell Campus (IEP-G) – if you are thinking about completing the IEP-G and then requesting to be considered for conditional admission to MER on that basis, please contact the program director to discuss first.
