Personal Profile
Dr. Larry Bauer earned his undergraduate degree in computer engineering at the University of Alberta in 1984, after which he wrote accounting and inventory control software for 10 years. Most of the time it seemed that writing accounting software involved spending the first afternoon solving the interesting part of the problem and the next six-weeks making the output look pretty. Having had enough of writing software, he spent a year at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK, studying philosophy – only to discover that much of the study of philosophy involves reading what dead people have to say about other dead people. Seeking a more "lively" career, he enrolled in the master of business administration (MBA) program at the University of Alberta upon his return to Canada, and transferred to the PhD program in finance at the end of the first year. He has found teaching and research in the finance area to be a lively and exciting career.
