What can we learn from road traffic accidents

Abstract

Road accidents are one of the main attributors for untimely death and economic loss. Analyzing accident record data can provide useful information on factors associated with road accidents to design policies for future prediction and possible prevention. In this project, I used road traffic accident data collected in United Kingdom from 2005 to 2016 and applied data mining methods to find the patterns and main factors of road accidents. I applied Seasonal Autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) for accident number prediction and apriori association rule to investigate the possible factors that are associated with road accidents depending on vehicle types. Finally, I used a visualization tool Datashader to depict the geographical distribution of road accidents in UK. The results of this project can be helpful for better understanding of the causes of road accidents and designing prevention policies.
