Abstract

Like all industries, Software Development has struggled with trying to understand what quality is, in the context of what we produce. What is unique about our struggle is that we have some of the most powerful tools imaginable to analyze data, but still cannot come up with an answer that addresses this struggle in a meaningful way. Is the problem simply unsolvable?

Modern society has become increasingly reliant on software development for our daily lives. From the largest communication networks, down to the pacemaker in a person's chest, we need and expect the software to "just work." So how do we, as people working on software development, know if we're delivering good quality software?

This presentation aims to offer some food for thought on the subject, in the hopes of advancing the conversation around the questions "What is Quality in Software, and Why Does It Matter To You?"
