Abstract

Very often models are built with preconceived notions about the field, making “expert knowledge” a mold to fit the data to rather than a guide. In order to circumvent this problem, one can apply tools and techniques borrowed from seemingly unrelated fields, as they are usually unbiased towards the data at hand. I will present ideas on how to apply graph and network theory, information and social sciences methods to genetic large-scale datasets, and let the data show guide the research and not the other way around.

Bio: Christian Darabos received a double Ph.D. degree in Information Systems and Biotechnologies from the universities of Lausanne (Switzerland) and Torino (Italy). After joining Dartmouth College as a post-doctoral fellow in 2010, he was recently promoted to staff research scientist. His research interests range across the fields of Machine Learning, Data Mining, coupled with bio-inspired computation applied to large-scale datasets analysis, signal detection, and network visualization.
