Building Emergent Ontology from Folksonomies

Abstract

Curating the data available on the internet is beyond the ability of any authorities. Instead of a top down manner for creating metadata, users contributed metadata is both more abundant and relevant for helping navigating the ocean of online data. But this new approach suffers from its own shortcomings. As one of the most popular forms of user created metadata, tags are often criticized as homonymous and lacking the semantic relations between them. In this paper we describe a novel method to (1) determine the different meanings for a given tag, and (2) establish semantic relations between different tags in a folksonomy. To assess the relativeness of the relations, we also developed a model to quantitatively evaluate the closeness of two tags for a given relation. A series of experiment results is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of method.
