Our Priorities for Support

The Faculty of Science is entering an exciting new phase marked by increased enrolment and heightened research activity.

These developments bring both opportunities and challenges, which we aim to tackle with the generous support of our alumni and friends. We have identified significant areas that require additional resources to ensure the continued success and growth of the faculty in the years ahead. We are excited to share these priorities with you and hope you find inspiration in the ways you can make a difference.

First and foremost, our students will always remain our top priority.

The students of the Faculty of Science are the reason we exist. Our foremost priority is to ensure that they have access to state-of-the-art facilities, financial support, and enriching experiences that enable them to reach their full potential. By investing in their success, we are shaping the future of science and research in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Faculty of Science offers a variety of awards, scholarships and bursaries to its students, many of whom rely on these to begin or continue their studies.

We are very grateful to the alumni and friends of the school who have supported our students. Without their generous support, our students would face significantly more challenges in attaining their education.

Through student awards, talent, hard work and leadership are rewarded. Student awards also make a student's current studies more affordable. It is our goal to increase the number of scholarships, awards and bursaries available to our students to ensure they have a bright future. Interested in learning about how to create a scholarship, visit our how to create a scholarship page.

There are four types of student awards and each is based on different criteria. You may be interested in supporting a specific type of award and for your convenience we have outlined them below.

  • Scholarships recognize the achievements of a student in an academic field. They can be presented to students who have attained excellence in a specific scientific field, research discipline, or for other achievements. Scholarships can be awarded at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Bursaries are created to ensure that students who are in financial need can gain access to higher education and training. The value of a bursary can have a significant impact on the lives of students who are struggling financially to pay tuition and other living expenses.
  • Awards are a remarkable way to celebrate the accomplishments of students who are excelling within the Faculty of Science, the university or in the community. An award can recognize student attributes such as community service, leadership, or other special criteria.
  • Fellowships provide essential funding for graduate degree programs, supporting students as they engage in advanced research. By offering fellowships, we attract top talent to the field of science and support their groundbreaking work.

When you give to program enrichment, you are making a significant difference in the lives of our students. Donations to program enrichment ensure that our students are able to participate in exciting travel experiences and gain valuable insights into new research areas while lessening their financial burdens. The following program enrichment areas have been designated funding priorities to guarantee that our students will be able to participate in all that the Faculty of Science has to offer.

Lecture Series allow the Faculty of Science to invite distinguished scholars and researchers to speak to our faculty and students about new and important subjects in science. These lecture series also allow the Faculty of Science to welcome alumni and friends to our campus, so they may learn and enjoy the same benefits as our students.

Student Travel Grants grants allow students to gain national experience and opportunities to participate in academic conferences while subsidizing the costs of travel. We want our students to be able to make the most of their university experience and travel grants allow our undergraduate and graduate students the advantages they need to compete on a national level.

Harlow Travel Bursaries, Memorial University is extremely fortunate in its ability to offer an international experience to our students. The Harlow Campus situated in Harlow, England, offers our students the ability to study in a different country. In addition, students have the once-in-a-lifetime ability to travel to different parts of the British Isles and to other European counties as part of their semester abroad. This wonderful experience can be cost prohibitive for some students and the Faculty of Science wishes to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to partake in Harlow exchange programs.

We take great pride in the research being conducted in the Faculty of Science. With your support, we will be able to continue to undertake research that has tangible benefits for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and citizens around the world.

Undergraduate Research Scholarships
Our undergraduate students are a group of remarkable individuals with a zest for creativity and a passion for discovery. We are committed to fostering a community of student researchers who will undertake important knowledge development projects in a highly ethical manner. The ability to offer summer undergraduate research scholarships allows us to hone the research, problem solving and critical thinking skills of our students who demonstrate an aptitude for research.

Graduate Research Fellowships
The need for fellowships has never been higher as we continue to bring in top students from around the world. Fellowships support our graduate students in their efforts to produce research. Graduate students also provide invaluable assistance in course delivery and teaching activities. The ability to offer financial assistance to our graduate students enables us to create the next generation of scientists, instructors and scholars.

The Faculty of Science is currently reviewing its space plans to ensure we can continue to meet the growing needs of students and researchers in the future. Therefore, we have carefully identified our areas of need for the future physical development of our school.

Student Space
Our student body continues to expand and we are seeking ways to respond to this growth. We are currently exploring areas that can be developed into student-centred spaces. The transformation of pre-existing spaces into student-friendly spaces will require significant resources, but this is a challenge we will happily embrace to provide a better experience for our students.

Teaching and Research Space
We are committed to providing our students with access to the most modern tools, allowing them to better understand and lead science in new directions.

Faculty and Administrative Space
Each year we work to advance the physical resources of our faculty and staff and we can accomplish more with your help. We have identified office space as a key area for support and are creating plans to overcome this challenge.

Thank you for taking the time to explore how you can help advance science education and research in Newfoundland and Labrador.
