Engineering professor named University Research Professor
Dr. Stephen Butt was officially named a University Research Professor during the President’s Awards ceremony, held on Dec. 8.
The title is the most prestigious award the university bestows for research. It is a designation above the rank of professor and reserved for faculty members who have demonstrated a consistently high level of scholarship, including graduate student supervision and other mentoring activities, and whose research is of a truly international stature.
“I am honoured to have been recognized by Memorial University and my colleagues both within academia and at collaborating companies and institutions,” said Dr. Butt. “I am truly grateful for this prestigious award.”
Dr. Butt is a professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science’s Department of Process Engineering. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Memorial University and PhD in mining engineering from Queen’s University.
Dr. Butt is a geological engineer and a global expert in the field of drilling technology. His research has improved drilling penetration rates, including technology that has been patented and licensed. Dr. Butt has a keen interest in the development of natural resources in Canada through teaching, research and industry collaboration.
Dr. Butt has also received the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Canada Region Drilling Award, the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineers (CSChE) Award in Design and Industrial Practice and the faculty’s Dean’s Award for Research Excellence.
