Personal Profile

Dr. Lihong Zhang obtained his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, Germany in 2003. Then he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Concordia University, Montreal, and Dalhousie University, Halifax, both in Canada, for two years. After that, he was with the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, as a post-doctoral research associate. In Oct. 2006, he joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, where he is currently a Full Professor.

Honours/Awards/Accreditation

Dr. Zhang received Leaders Opportunity Fund Award from Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) in 2008. In 2016, he received the Faculty Award for Research Excellence from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His research team is supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Research and Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador, Memorial University, and various companies (such as Agilent Tech., SUN, DELL, Keithley, Altera, BEEcube, IBM, Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor Graphics, etc) with their in-kind contribution.

Research Highlights

Dr. Zhang’s research team is dedicated to addressing VLSI design and implementation challenges in the modern submicron and nanometer technologies. The research activities cover electronic design automation (EDA), analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design, digital system design and implementation, MEMS design and optimization, microfluidics and biosensors, wireless sensor networks, and microprocessor-based instrumentation for ocean and biomedical applications.
