Research Week screening of The Films of Fogo Island
You’re invited to a lunch-time screening of The Films of Fogo Island, a new documentary produced and directed by Dr. Jeff Webb, professor, Department of History, and Derek Norman, Memorial film unit co-ordinator with HSS Films, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Date: Tuesday, Nov. 12
Time: 12-2 p.m.
Location: The Dr. Richard Fagan Lecture Theatre, room IM101, Faculty of Medicine, St. John’s Campus
In 1967, a filmmaker from the National Film Board of Canada and a field worker from Memorial University made a series of 27 films on Fogo Island. The exercise pioneered the use of film as a community development tool and made an indelible mark on film history in Canada.
The Films of Fogo Island marks the 50th anniversary of the Fogo Process and features original footage with new interviews of the films’ subjects.
Four years in the making, and funded by the Institute of Social and Economic Research, the JR Smallwood Foundation and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Co-operatives, the 44-minute long documentary is a production of Memorial’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Film Unit.
Both Dr. Webb and Mr. Norman will be on-hand to introduce the documentary and answer questions after the screening.
Hope to see you there!
