Canada Excellence Research Chairs
Memorial welcomed its first Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in late 2023 in the field of next-generation communication technologies.
The Canada Excellence Research Program is a tri-agency initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). It is administered by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS), which is housed within SSHRC.
The CERC program attracts the highest calibre of experts to lead breakthroughs in science, technology and innovation. CERC awards are non-renewable and valued at either $8 million or $4 million over eight years.
This inaugural CERC will enhance Memorial’s significant strengths in telecommunications, and information and communication technology (ICT), which represent strategic and critical areas of research for the institution.
