Vice-president (research) appointed to board of governors for the Council of Canadian Academies
Dr. Richard Marceau, Memorial University’s vice-president (research), was formally appointed to the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) board of governors today, Tuesday, July 28.
The CCA is an independent, not-for-profit organization that supports independent, authoritative and evidence-based expert assessments that inform public policy development in Canada. The council’s work encompasses a broad definition of science, incorporating the natural, social and health sciences as well as engineering and the humanities.
Through its expert assessments the council helps to identify: emerging issues, gaps in knowledge, Canadian strengths and international trends and practices. The council is comprised of a board of governors, a scientific advisory committee and a secretariat.
“I am grateful to have been considered for this prestigious position within the council,” said Dr. Marceau. “I look forward to working with the expert board of governors of the CCA and the scientific advisory committee in identifying important scientific issues and trends that will guide future public policies in Canada.”
The council’s founding member academies are the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Each member academy appoints two governors. The six governors then appoint two additional governors from the general public. The remaining four governors are proposed by the federal Ministry of Industry, but are formally appointed by the board.
Dr. Marceau is the past president of the CAE, serving as president on the academy’s board of directors from 2012 to 2014. The CAE is the national institution through which Canada’s most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada. The academy is an independent, self-governing and non-profit organization established in 1987.
Dr. Marceau is the co-editor of Canada: Becoming a Sustainable Energy Powerhouse with Dr. Clement W. Bowman, which was published in 2014 by the CAE, as well as Canada: Winning as a Sustainable Energy Superpower Volume I and Volume II, also co-edited with Dr. Bowman and published in 2012 by the CAE.
