Upcoming online ACENET training

ACENET is hosting a series of free online training sessions.

ACENET provides advanced research computing resources, expertise, consulting and training to post-secondary researchers, students, industry and collaborators throughout Atlantic Canada. Advanced computing entails computationally and/or data intensive work that is beyond the capabilities of a desktop, including high performance, big data and GPU computing. It also includes developing cloud-based platforms and portals for research communities, storage and large-scale file transfer.

The following training sessions are available to researchers and students across all disciplines, as well as industry innovators. Please register prior to the sessions at the links below or on the ACENET training page.

ACENET BASICS

Introduction to ACENET & Compute Canada
What is high performance computing (HPC) and what can it do for me? How can ACENET help? Used by researchers across many disciplines to tackle analyses too large or complex for a desktop, or to achieve improved efficiency over a desktop, this session takes participants through the preliminary stages of learning about HPC and computing clusters, and how to get started with this type of computing.

Sessions:

  • May 19, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Atlantic
  • May 21, 1-2 p.m. Atlantic

Further details and registration instructions are available here.

Introduction to Linux
In this session, learn how to get started with Linux, how to create and navigate directories for your data, load files, manage your storage, run programs on the computing clusters, and set file permissions.

Sessions:

  • May 20, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Atlantic
  • May 21, 2:30-3:30 p.m. Atlantic

Further details and registration instructions are available here.

Introduction to Shell Scripting
Participants will learn how to use shell scripting to exercise the power of the command line. Shell scripting helps you save time, automate file management tasks, and better use Linux. This session teaches you how to name, locate and set permissions for executable files, taking input and producing output.

Sessions:

  • May 21, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Atlantic
  • May 22, 1-2 p.m. Atlantic

Further details and registration details are available here.

Job Scheduling With Slurm
This session teaches participants how to use Compute Canada's queuing environment on the national systems using the job scheduler Slurm.

Sessions:

  • May 22, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Atlantic
  • May 22, 2:30-3:30 p.m. Atlantic

Further details & registration details are available here.

ACENET PARALLEL COMPUTING SCHOOL

This school seeks to educate participants in some tools and techniques used in high-performance computing and scientific computation. Topics will include general parallel computing, Dask, Machine Learning by example, OpenMP, GPGPU, and Message Passing Interface (MPI). Each two-hour session will include a lecture and learning exercises. Participants will be provided take-home exercises to prepare for the next session. Between sessions, online office hours will be provided for extra help.

The course is aimed at researchers and innovators, both academic and industrial.

Participants must have familiarity with the Unix command line, such as one might have on completion of the ACENET Basics series, and some level of programming experience. Participants must also have a Compute Canada account.

Sessions:

  • June 2 to July 9, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-4 p.m. Atlantic

Further details and registration information are available here.
