Faculty Members
The following is a list of core faculty members currently involved with the program. There are other faculty members from other departments who are willing to supervise or co-supervise graduate students in the program. There are also scientists from government agencies who are available to supervise from time to time.
Abrahams, Mark - (Biology/Ocean Sciences) The ecology of fear — investigating non-lethal predator-prey interactions and how they are mediated by the characteristics of the predator, its prey, and their environment. Research mostly focuses on fish and also includes how their physiology interacts with their environment including sensory abilities, tolerance to hypoxia, and effects of temperature. (PhD, Simon Fraser)

Bitton, Pierre-Paul - (Psychology) Visual communication; exploring the proximate and ultimate mechanisms of visual signals in birds, fish, and other critters. Visit website
Chapman, Tom - (Biology) The role of microbes in social evolution - defenders of insect colonies lay down their lives, often in spectacular battles with enemies. But, they may also be involved in a less obvious role of fighting pathogenic microorganisms. (PhD, Simon Fraser)
Fleming, Ian - (Ocean Sciences) Fish evolutionary and behavioural ecology - emphasis on breeding system evolution, life history diversity, phenotypic plasticity and maternal effects, with application to conservation biology and fisheries management including species invasion, population restoration and captive breeding (PhD, Toronto)

Hurford, Amy - (Mathematics and Statistics and Biology) theoretical ecology, evolution, and epidemiology. I develop mechanistic models that consider how intra- and interspecific species interactions affect population dynamics. I am interested how these interactions influence disease spread, the establishment of mutualisms, and social group formation. (PhD, Queen's)

Koen-Alonso, Mariano - (DFO) trophic ecology, ecological modeling, multispecies modeling, community dynamics, population dynamics, fisheries management, biostatistics, diet analysis (marine fish and marine mammals), nonparametric statistics, computer intensive methods
Leroux, Shawn - (Biology) Ecosystem ecologist studying the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In particular, how the consumptive (i.e. predation) and non-consumptive (i.e. predation risk) effects of predators cascade to impact ecosystem elemental cycling and how species respond and adapt to global change. (PhD, McGill)

Marino, Paul - (Biology) Plant manipulation of insect behaviour. I work with a model system in which a highly specialized group of mosses attract insects (flies) via visual and odour cues in order to disperse their spores to discrete patchy resources. (PhD, Alberta)

Miller, Ted - (Biology) Research focuses on morphological, behavioural, and acoustic evolution, with special reference to sexual selection and speciation in birds (PhD, Dalhousie)
