Study Off Campus
Within Memorial University there are outstanding teaching and research facilities, such as the Ocean Sciences Centre, Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station, the Botanical Garden and Harlow Campus.
The Ocean Sciences Centre is a cold ocean research facility located in Logy Bay, about 10 minutes from the St. John's campus. The centre houses laboratores where research is conducted on the North Atlantic fishery, aquaculture, oceanography, ecology, behaviour and physiology.
The Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station, located on Newfoundland's west coast, is a world-class facility offering a host of services to students, researchers, educators and the general public. Equipped with teaching and research laboratories, library/resource centre, multimedia theatre, aquarium, residence accommodations, and small boats, the station offers students and researchers a first-rate facility for marine ecosystem research. The Faculty of Science's Department of Biology offers several undergraduate field courses here each year. The station is surrounded by Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and the Bonne Bay area exhibits unparalleled diversity of habitat, marine plants, fish and invertebrates.
The Memorial University Botanical Garden comprises ten acres of cultivated gardens and 100 acres of natural habitat. It undertakes and provides opportunities for biological, ecological, and horticultural education and research for the University, the general public, school children and other organized groups. Research activities include rare plant conservation, site restoration, invasive species, non-timber forest products, and medicinal and ornamental plant research and development.
The Harlow Campus of Memorial University is used by our professional schools and academic departments to offer programs, normally of one semester in length. Harlow is located in Old Harlow, Essex, UK, midway between London and Cambridge. It is linked to both cities by road and railway. The campus consists of a group of 19th-century buildings and has accomodations for 51 students. The Biology and Biochemistry departments typically offer field courses at Harlow Campus in May.
