Clinical Skills
Overview
Clinical Skills are taught regularly throughout Phases 1, 2 and 3.
Sessions
HIstory/Physical Demo (Session 1): Small Group Session (3-5 Students per Group)
Each Group will have 1 Session where the tutor will demonstrate a complete history and physical examination. Students may participate at the tutor's discretion, however, it is intended that students mainly observe.
Formative History and Physical Examination
- One student does the history and another does the physical examination while the remaining students in the Group and tutor observe.
- ALL students submit a write-up no later than 48hrs after the session.
- These sessions are designed for the students to learn how to incoporate body systems into a complete Hx/PE. They do not count towards the overall grade for the year, but are mandatory.
- Tutors should provide feedback during the sessions.

- Each student completes a physical exam on a standardized patient within one hour. A sample checklist is attached.
- The session is formative and as such, the examiner should spend some time at the end reviewing the checklist with the student and providing feedback.
- Please complete the marking scheme at the end of the checklist and return all forms to Kelly in the CLSC, Room M1M210, Faculty of Medicine.
- The Formative Assessment Form will be available when you arrive for your scheduled session.

- During the Session: History & Physical exam findings are presented by two members of the Group (one at a time; each presentation should be about 40 mins).
- Where possible - the SPs will be present for this session which usually takes place in the CLSC.
- Problem List and Differential Diagnosis should be discussed
- All students should be prepared to participate in the discussion of the examination, Problem List and Differential diagnosis.
- Tutors should provide feedback, particulary to students who are presenting a History & Physical.
- As with formative sessions, there will be a write-up of the History & Physical.
