RESEARCH ASSISTANT II (BAND LEVEL 7)

Cold Ocean Deep Sea Research Facility

Department of Ocean Sciences

(Contractual Position to January 5, 2027)

DUTIES

Reporting to the Manager, Cold Ocean Deep Sea Research Facility (CDRF), the successful applicant will oversee and assist in the day-to-day operation of the Level 2/3 Containment Facility and other rooms (labs) located in the CDRF. Duties will include  ensuring the facility meets, exceeds, and is operating within, the standards set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for facilities handling aquatic animal pathogens and invasive species; communicating and planning CDRF work/projects with principal investigators and CDRF users; writing standard operating procedures (SOPs); documenting/tracking the equipment and space used, for the purposes of invoicing users; training users in the facilities procedures/operations; ensuring all individuals entering the containment zone (CZ) have the proper bio-safety training; assisting with operation and maintenance of equipment in the facility, including the CZ, including but not limited to autoclaves, UV sterilization units, water purification systems, biological safety cabinets, centrifuges, incubators, etc.; assisting users with implementation of, and providing technical support for, experiments on aquatic organisms; preparing/growing pathogens for organism infection; processing samples for molecular analyses or histology; monitoring liquid nitrogen long-term sample storage; ordering routine supplies; sending out communications to the Department of Ocean Sciences as necessary; responding to urgent/time-sensitive issues and inquiries pertaining to the CDRF; maintaining a continuous high degree of cleanliness in areas of the facility not serviced by the janitorial team (including histology suite and microscopy room); and performing other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (1-3 years) in direct research, with a strong background in biological science; completion of an Undergraduate degree, supplemented by coursework towards a Master degree in a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. The ideal candidate will have experience in the care and husbandry of aquatic organisms, as well as extensive experience/training in one or more of the following: pathogen isolation, tissue (pathogen) culture, and tissue histology. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and multi-tasking skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

 

SALARY                                   $59,901 - $70,273 per annum (Non-Bargaining)
