Respectful Workplace
Memorial University is committed to supporting a climate of respect in the workplace where individuals or groups of individuals are free from harassment and discrimination. The university seeks to promote awareness and create an understanding of what is considered harassment and provides a mechanism to have harassment concerns and complaints in the workplace addressed.
All employees of Memorial must respect the rights of other employees. Employees are obligated to take reasonable care to not engage in, and to report any observations or experiences of, bullying and workplace harassment.
The university’s Respectful Workplace policy outlines the methods for addressing issues of harassment, which includes the informal early resolution of concerns and the formal complaint process. To learn more about the policy and what to do if you see or experience harassment, please click here.
Inclusiveness in the Workplace
Memorial is committed to maintaining an environment of understanding and respect for the dignity and worth of each person in support of inclusiveness in its workplace programs and practices. The duty to accommodate is an ethical and legal responsibility. The Workplace Accommodation policy sets forward the guiding principles of accommodation and establishes a framework for the process.
Memorial is fortunate to be one of the most diverse institutions within Newfoundland and Labrador and this diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The university seeks to build an environment where all employees are equal, valued and supported.
The People and Culture team provides resources that can assist in maintaining a welcoming and inclusivework environment for all.
Workplace Violence Prevention
Mandatory Workplace Violence Prevention training is required for all Memorial University employees (both administrative and academic). The objective of this training program is to create a greater awareness of the changes to the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Regulations that came into effect in January 2020 with respect to workplace violence.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations include provisions on worker-on-worker violence, family violence in the workplace, development and implementation of a harassment plan and risk assessment.
Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault
The university recognizes its ethical and legal responsibility to provide a work, learning and living environment that is free of all forms of sexual violence, including sexual assault. Students, faculty and staff have the right to an environment that is free from sexual violence. For additional information, please consult the Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault policy, the University-Wide Procedures for Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault Concerns and Complaints or visit the Sexual Harassment Office website.
