DUTIES

The successful applicant will be required to perform skilled technical work in the operation of electron microscopy and flow cytometry equipment within the Medical Laboratories for the Faculty of Medicine. Electron microscopy duties include documenting, preparing and examining biological materials for teaching, research, and clinical purposes. The successful candidate will also perform routine electron microscopic procedures including fixing, processing, embedding, cutting (using ultramicrotomes), staining, examination of biological material as well as clinical biopsy referral specimens, and recording representative micrographs of sample material. The individual will also assist in routine maintenance of equipment. Flow cytometry duties include operation of acell sorter and benchtop flow cytometer, quality control and maintenance of machines, and assisting the supervisor in experimental design of flow cytometry experiments. Confocal microscopy (9 multiple units) and cellular bioanalysis duties include assisting in training users and assist in routine maintenance. Other duties include database management; updating and maintaining chemical inventory systems; preparing chemical solutions; assisting in demonstrations and related techniques; ensuring safe lab practices and quality control of specimens; adhering to privacy and confidentiality regulations and other duties as required. This position will also require the ability to aid in safety equipment testing in the wet laboratory common spaces within the Faculty of Medicine on a weekly basis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (1-3 years) in electron microscopy and flow cytometry laboratory is required; graduation with a masters degree in Biological Sciences as well as a three-year course in Medical Technology; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Eligibility for registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP) and additional knowledge of the delivery of provincial health care services are assets.


SALARY                                   $63,803 - $74,843 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
