LABORATORY INSTRUCTOR (BAND LEVEL 9)

School of Human Kinetics and Recreation

(Contractual Sessional Position to April 30, 2025)

DUTIES

The successful applicant will be responsible for instructing students and preparing undergraduate laboratory classes and fieldtrips in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR). Duties include working with the course instructor to design and prepare labs and/or experiential learning opportunities; instructing and assisting students in practical techniques during the labs and/or fieldtrips; marking and grading lab reports; designing lab exercises in collaboration with other laboratory instructors and faculty members; supervising student assistants; assisting students outside of formal laboratory periods and providing remedial help; supervising tests and other evaluations; assisting with research related activities of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students; assuring awareness of, adherence to, and appropriate training of laboratory policies and procedures, emergency action plans, and updating safety guidelines, and emergency response plans as needed. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies needed to conduct the various labs and/or fieldtrips; assisting with inventory control and the gathering of fixed asset information; maintaining, setting up and calibrating research equipment; assisting course instructors in the testing and monitoring of students participating in studies; and performing other related duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (3-5 years) in conducting or facilitating learning in an HKR laboratory environment; graduation from a Masters of Kinesiology program; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Expertise in the areas of human anatomy, human physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, and fitness leadership is essential and knowledge of our physical education and recreation degree programs would be beneficial. Candidates with experience teaching in these areas will be given preference. The ideal candidate will have considerable knowledge in the areas of instruction, assessment, and supporting student learning, as well as the ability to operate and maintain laboratory settings. A Clinical Exercise Physiologist designation from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology would be an asset. The successful applicant must be able to work independently as well as within a team setting, be an effective problem solver and be able to guide and provide effective feedback to students.  

 

SALARY                                   $67,857 - $79,601 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
