The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University is North America’s most comprehensive maritime learning campus, dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response and technology transfer in support of ocean industries and the Blue Economy. The School of Maritime Studies, within the Marine Institute, is involved in a wide variety of education, research, and training for the maritime industry.  This includes three- and four-year technology diplomas covering all aspects of the marine transportation industry, including Naval Architecture, Marine Mechanical Design, Marine Engineering and Nautical Science programs.  Graduates of the Diploma of Technology programs are eligible to continue their studies in the degree programs offered at Memorial University, through the Marine Institute - Bachelor of Maritime Studies (BMS), Bachelor of Technology (BTECH) and a course-based Master of Maritime Management (MMM). 

 

DUTIES

The successful applicants will be responsible for teaching a variety of courses in vessel and marine mechanical design to students enrolled in the three-year diploma of technology programs in both the Naval Architecture and Marine Mechanical Design diploma programs, and any future undergraduate degree program delivered by the school in this discipline. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ongoing curriculum development for continuous program improvement, collaboration and support with other instructors and team members.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The applicant should have extensive maritime design industry experience (minimum 10 years), with a proven track record in vessel and/or systems design.  The applicant should possess as a minimum a Diploma in Naval Architecture or Maine Engineering Systems Design/Marine Mechanical Design.  A Graduate Degree in either Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering would be considered an additional asset. An undergraduate degree in conjunction with equivalent experience may also be considered. Experience in all aspects of marine design: ship mechanical systems, ship structure, resistance and propulsion, hull form development, stability, electrical systems, offshore structures, project management, and shipyard practice is desired. Computer experience in both 2D and 3D design software is required.  The successful applicant should be familiar with emerging technologies and the current challenges facing the maritime and shipbuilding industry; emission reductions, alternate fuel technologies, condition monitoring, pollution control, etc. Prior teaching experience would be an asset.  The ideal candidate will have a combination of practical and theoretical knowledge in the design of ships and other floating structures.

 

SALARY:                      Commensurate with Marine Institute’s Instructors’ Collective Agreement
