DUTIES

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate Counsel is a senior member of the Office of General Counsel, working both independently and collaboratively in a collegial team environment to provide legal advice and services to the University. Supporting and working closely with the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel, duties include performing legal research; reviewing and preparing contracts and letters; drafting documents for hearings; presenting at arbitrations and other administrative tribunals; ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal guidelines where applicable; and identifying discrepancies or errors.

The Associate Counsel must be able to build relationships and inspire confidence in interactions with Counsel and diverse constituencies inside and outside of the University.

The position requires a lawyer with some experience and/or familiarity in the following areas of law: contract, procurement, tort, administrative (including student matters), employment, labour relations, human rights, information and privacy, intellectual property, and compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (3-5 years) in legal practice; completion of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree or Juris Doctor (JD) Degree; must be a member in good standing (or eligible) with the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. The candidate will possess current knowledge of the legal environment; the ability to identify and distill applicable legal issues and principles to given fact situations and questions; excellent legal research skills; organizational and time management skills; the ability to present, both orally and in writing, legal opinions and arguments; excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills are required. The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and diverse environment with an emphasis on client-oriented solutions.

SALARY                       $80,801 - $103,465 per annum (Management and Professional)
