13 August: Awards at Science Symposium

Megan Duffett and Kathy Keating both won awards for their posters presented at the Science Summer Student Symposium. Congratulations to both of these students.

4 July: Science Summer Student Symposium, August 13th, 2008

All Undergraduate Summer Research Assistants in the Faculty of Science are invited to present a poster on their work to members of the Faculty and their peers.

3 July: Graduate Student Success

Three Ph.D. students will receive tri-council funding. Annie Jalbert was awarded an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship D; Joe Eastwood and Marc-Robert D'Entremont were each awarded an SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship D.

Two Masters students were also awarded funding. Elizabeth Russell will receive an NLCAHR Masters Fellowship, and Kristen Williams will receive a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship M as well as a School of Graduate Studies F. A. Aldrich Award.

12 June: Dr. Jon Lien Honoured

Retired Psychology professor Dr. Jon Lien was honoured with two awards for his work with whales: He received the Order of Canada as well as a Canadian Environment Award.

26 May: NSERC USRA Awards

31 March: NSERC Success

Dr. Darcy Hallett and Dr. Christina Thorpe were both awarded new NSERC funding for five years, and Dr. Darlene Skinner had her grant renewed for another five years. The full list of NSERC Discovery Grant holders is:

Wednesday 19 March: Stephanie Walsh will give a departmental colloquium entitled "Prospective Memory Development in Early Childhood" at 3:00 p.m. in SN2101.

12 March: Ph.D. Defence

Roxana Vernescu successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Sustained Attention Training in Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder." The examining committee was chaired by Dr. David Behm, School of Human Kinetics & Recreation, and the members were Dr. Sarah Francis, Dr. Ken Fowler, and Dr. McKay Moore Sohlberg of the University of Oregon. Her supervisor was Dr. Mary Courage, and the other supervisory committee members were Dr. Carolyn Harley and Dr. Patricia Canning, Faculty of Education.

Wednesday 12 March: Dr. William McKim will give a departmental colloquium entitled “Reductionism, Emergence, and the Unity of Knowledge“ at 3:00 p.m. in SN2101.

Friday 7 March: Vicki Friesen, from Queens University, will be giving a Departmental Colloquium entitled "New insights into seabird ecology, evolution and conservation provided by molecular markers" at 3:00 p.m. in SN2101.

29 February: Ph.D. Defence

Stacey Wareham successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Exploring Safety Behaviours in the Newfoundland Fibreglass Boat-Building Industry: A Community Based Study." The examining committee was chaired by Dr. Christine Way, School of Nursing, and the members were Dr. Cathryn Button, Dr. Nicole Power, Department of Sociology, and Dr. John Lewko of Laurentian University. Her supervisor was Dr. Christine Arlett, and the other supervisory committee members were Dr. Rita Anderson and Dr. T. S. Callanan, Psychiatry.

Wednesday 6 February: Dr. Elizabeth Perry, Research Associate, Genomics, CREAIT Network will give a departmental colloquium entitled “You, too, can incorporate molecular techniques into your animal behaviour studies. Meet the GaP Facility of CREAIT“ at 3:00 p.m. in SN2101.

Thursday 27 September: Dr Ian Neath will be giving a talk in the Cognitive Science Lecture Series entitled "SIMPLE: A Unitary Account of Memory" at Noon in Arts 2071.

25 September: SSHRC General Information Session

There will be a general information session on the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship program and Canada Graduate Scholarships program for masters and doctoral students on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at Bitters, Feild Hall, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tips will be given on the specifics of writing a strong application as well as providing examples from successful applicants’ forms. Undergraduate students in their final year, graduate students and faculty are welcome to attend this session.

24 September: NSERC General Information Session

There will be a general information session on NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship/Postgraduate Scholarship programs and the Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship programs for masters and doctoral students on Monday, September 24, 2007, at Bitters, Feild Hall from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Undergraduate students in their final year, graduate students and faculty are welcome to attend this session.

17 September: NSERC Information Session

A representative from NSERC will be visiting Memorial University on Monday, 17 September, 2007, to give and information session on the Canada Graduate Scholarship/Postgraduate Scholarship (CGS/PGS M & CGS/PGS D) programs and the Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship programs. The session will take place in room IIC-2014, in the Inco Innovation Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and is open to undergraduate students in their final year, graduate students, and faculty.

12 September: Psychology Department Colloquium Series

Wednesday 12 September: Dr. Carole Peterson, University Research Professor in Psychology, will give a departmental colloquium entitled "Stitches & Casts: Factors Influencing Children's Memory" in room SN4073 from 3:00- 4:00p.m.

11 September: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Information Session

A representative from CIHR will be visiting Memorial University on Tuesday, 11 September, 2007. The main purpose of this visit is to provide students with information on the various CIHR Training Programs, including the Canada Graduate Scholarship for the Master's program and the Doctoral Awards program. This session, which is open to undergraduate students in their final year, graduate students, and faculty, will be held in room IIC-2014 in the Inco Innovation Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

7 September: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Information Session

A representative from SSHRC will be visiting Memorial University on Friday, 7 September, 2007. The main purpose of this visit is to provide students with information on the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships and the Canada Graduate Scholarships for the Master's and Doctoral programs. There will be two information sessions for students to attend depending on their program:

The CGS Master's information session will be held 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The CGS/SSHRC Doctoral information session will be held 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

These information sessions will be held in IIC-2014, Inco Innovation Centre, and are open to undergraduate students in their final year, graduate students, and faculty.

6 September: New Graduate Student Orientation

Thursday 6 September: The orientation for new graduate students in Psychology and CABE will begin at 3:45 in SN-3101. We invite current graduate students to join at 4:10, and invite all faculty and staff to join at 4:30.
