Severance and Other Post Employment Benefits

Non-bargaining, management and professional, and senior administrative management employees

At a meeting held Dec. 5, 2019, Memorial’s Board of Regents approved changes to severance and other post-employment benefits (OPEB) for non-bargaining, management and professional, and senior administrative management employees. These changes ensured consistency in the application of severance and OPEB practices for Memorial’s staff employee groups.

Severance: Within the above-mentioned employee groups only employees hired before Oct. 1, 2004 accrued severance. This severance accrual ceased effective Dec. 31, 2021. Please click here to read the severance guidelines.

OPEB: Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) are the group insurance benefits provided by the university to retirees and their beneficiaries in respect to coverage under the life insurance, supplementary health, travel and dental plans. NAPE and CUPE
Memorial and the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) signed collective agreements for locals 7803, 1804, 7804, 1809 and 7801 on April 8, 2019. The university and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) signed a collective agreement for local 1615 on Nov. 6, 2019. Included in the agreements was the payout of severance for eligible employees.
