COMMUNICATIONS ADVISOR (BAND LEVEL 7)

Faculty of Education

School of Human Kinetics and Recreation

(Contractual Position to September 30, 2026)

DUTIES 

Reporting to the Senior Administrative Officer, Faculty of Education, the Communications Advisor will coordinate the communication activities of the Faculty of Education (80%) and the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation (20%). For each of the Faculty of Education and the School of Human Kinetics, duties include providing strategic communication and public relations advice to the Dean; developing a communication plan; redesigning and maintaining the website; supporting social media activities and networking sites; issuing media advisories and public service announcements related to organized events; managing publications such as newsletters, annual reports, and other communications from inception to completion; researching and writing articles for the Gazette and other University publications; designing promotional concepts to enhance brand and recruitment strategy; writing and/or editing materials, considering such factors as the format and layout, graphics, and colour to produce the desired visual effect; coordinating production with printing sources; administering the annual Dean's awards nomination process and event; responding to requests for information; assisting in the coordination of promotional talks, news conferences, workshops and seminars; developing and implementing new communication initiatives; mentoring student employees; and performing other related duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Considerable experience (3-5 years) in communications, journalism or public relations, preferably in a professional, governmental, or educational environment; graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in public relations, communications, or marketing is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. The successful applicant must have considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques used to disseminate information for promotional purposes to prospective students and the general public; as well as the ability to set priorities, allocate resources, and develop concepts into newsworthy form. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience in web design and social media as integrated communication tools.

 

 

SALARY                        $59,855 - $83,793 per annum (Management and Professional)

                                       An upscale hiring step has been applied to this position (Step 6)
