Successful launch of climate change and the ocean exhibit at Bonne Bay Marine Station
Celebration was in the air on Saturday at the Trails, Tales and Tunes Festival in Norris Point – representatives of Memorial University and the provincial government officially launched a new exhibit about climate change and the ocean. The event also recognized the launch of a new app that will accompany the exhibit.
The project is an interactive climate change awareness exhibit called Newfoundland and Labrador: A Sea of Change, and is the product of collaboration between the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and BBMS, with financial support from the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Office of Climate Change and Memorial University’s Office of Public Engagement. The project is a component of the government’s Climate Change Action Plan through the Turn Back the Tide campaign.
The exhibit uses a custom-built downloadable digital application to show how climate change is impacting the marine environment, with information and examples that are specific to Newfoundland and Labrador. An interactive application is also available for download on smartphones.
“The digital focus of this exhibit brings something new and exciting to the Bonne Bay Marine Station and we are pleased to be working with the provincial government on this initiative,” said Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University. “This project will provide enriched learning experiences for our students and the 11,000 tourists and local visitors welcomed by this facility each year.”
