Memorial University Ocean Sciences Research Aquarium - Benefits

Benefits, Sponsorship & Contacts

  Aquaculture Industry

Public education is key to the success of aquaculture in Newfoundland. As a newly emerging aquaculture industry replaces more traditional fisheries, the dissemination of factual, well-balanced information is paramount. Home to Newfoundland and Labrador's only aquaculture related research and development facility the Ocean Sciences Centre is perfectly positioned to take a lead in the public awareness of the Newfoundland aquaculture industry.

"The solutions for the transition to a viable rural economy in Newfoundland are rooted in education. The potential for Aquaculture to provide wealth and prosperity will not be realized if individuals are not provided with the information to make informed choices pertaining to the opportunities inherent in the aquaculture industry for marine rural communities"

Bob O'Neill, Executive Director, Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association

Public Education

One third of all visitors to the OSC are school children. A curriculum based interpretive program combined with outreach activities will increase our young people's awareness of Newfoundland and Labrador's marine resources, as well as draw attention to careers in marine sciences. The Ocean Sciences Research Aquarium will become a primary resource for ocean science education.

"our students visit the Ocean Sciences Centre to gain hands on experience with a wide variety of fish and marine organisms that live on our ecosystem"

Science Department, Macdonald Drive Junior High School, St. John's

Tourism

With icebergs in the spring, whales in summer, and exquisite coastal scenery, the Ocean Sciences Centre draws provincial, national and international visitors each year. Between 1994 and 1999 just under 15,000 people/annum visited the facility.

"Now that we have seen the plans for the open concept for the main building, we predict the Ocean Sciences Centre will become one of the top 3-4 tourism attractions on the Avalon."

Mike Buist, General Manager, Avalon Convention and Visitors Bureau
