Located in beautiful Logy Bay, the Ocean Sciences Centre (OSC) is a research arm of Memorial University focusing on cold ocean sciences, and is a leading centre for aquaculture research in Canada.
Since 1988 the OSC has organized and played a continuous role in public awareness in marine sciences through public and school marine science programs. With support from Memorial University, government agencies and private industry, the establishment of a permanent interpretive program within the Ocean Sciences Centre will showcase marine biological and aquaculture research being conducted at Memorial University. In doing so the uniqueness of our cold, ocean environment and its flora and fauna will be evident.
Based on the radial design of a sea anemone, the OSC is ideally suited to the open concept of the Ocean Sciences Research Aquarium. The increased area will allow us to accommodate larger groups of visitors including school groups, bus tours, and conventions. Guided tours and unescorted visits will be available year round. Our existing Seal Research Facility will be incorporated as part of the public viewing areas.
Features will include:
Live marine flora and fauna highlighting research activities, fisheries issues, and the emerging aquaculture industry in Newfoundland;
Touch tank where visitors can experience a never-ending variety of local marine life;
Harp and Harbour seals with out-door viewing platform;
Dynamic storyboards and multimedia interactive presentations;
Teaching laboratory with flowing seawater for hands-on, student enrichment programs and demonstrations;
