Grounded in Memory: August 19-September 23, 2022
Memories are sparked … and created by plants.
Grounded in Memory is a collaborative exhibition between the Botanical Art Society and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, curated by Margaret Walsh Best and Susan Furneaux. The curatorial theme is the connection between memory and plants. The concurrent exhibitions, combining both art and craft, are at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (155 Water Street, St. John's, NL) & MUN Botanical Garden (306 Mt. Scio Road, St. John’s, NL)
Several events are planned to complement the exhibit. Please see below for events at the Botanical Garden location.

Personalized Exhibition Tour I
Thursday, August 25, 11:00am - 12:00noon
Join exhibiting botanical artists Sharon Smith (watercolour) and Mary Lou Vokey (watercolour) as they introduce you to the exhibition and talk about the process of creating their own pieces of art. Sharon & Mary Lou will share their personal stories about their chosen plants for this exhibition. We welcome questions and your plant stories as well!

Join exhibiting botanical artists Kathie Chalker (watercolour and graphite) and Kathleen Murphy (acrylic) as they introduce you to the exhibition and talk about the process of creating their pieces of art. Presentation and Demonstration With Frances Ennis
Monday, August 29, 2:00 - 4:00pm
Frances Ennis will provide an overview of artworks in the “Grounded in Memory” concurrent exhibitions created by her and Maxine Ennis, with an emphasis on the various modalities used to create them. She will also talk about Ennis Designs' approach to creating two- and three-dimensional hooked pieces. This will be interspersed with a demonstration and an invitation to any visitors interested in trying their hand at rug hooking.

CANCELLED Botanical Art Presentation with Botanical Artist and Naturalist Glynn Bishop - Botanical Art Basics
Thursday, September 16, 1:00-3:00pm
Learn the basics of Botanical Art while observing the artist go through the process of developing and completing a painting of a wild mushroom. This casual, interactive presentation allows you to ask questions and even sketch along. Receive tips on the tools, materials, and techniques used to complete a botanical painting, starting with the observation and sketching. The artist will use a webcam so participants may sit and view on a large screen throughout the session. Supplies will be available for use and included in the fee but participants are welcome to bring a personal sketchbook.

Eco-printing Workshop with Textile Artist and Instructor Susan Furneaux
Thursday, September 23, 2:00-4:00pm
Learn about the magical process of creating natural dyes with local and cultivated botanicals and create an eco-print on fabric and watercolour paper. Join Susan Furneaux as she discusses her process of growing, foraging, and creating with natural dye plants. This is an interactive event. Event fee includes the cost of materials.
