Volunteer Activities
FOG members support both the Garden's mission and FOG's goals by participating in a variety of events and activities throughout the year. The membership application process and membership benefits are explained here.
A sampling of the volunteer opportunities that may be available:
Event Support: Those who like to interact with the public will enjoy helping with annual events such as Dog Days, Twilight Thursday, the Merry & Bright Light Festival, FOG Plant Sale and many other events that happen during the year.
Trail Patrol, Kayaking & Snowshoeing: These are individuals who enjoy being outdoors in nature.
- Through the summer season Trail Patrol volunteers may conduct patrols through the various trails and then alert the staff about anything that needs to be attended to.
- Snowshoers will assist with trail blazing and also alert staff to any issues.
- Kayaking volunteers are needed to assist the staff with on and off water safety during scheduled kayaking sessions. Some previous boating experience is required.
Carpentry Group: This group works in the Carpentry House building and repairing structures for the Garden. Membership in this group is limited in number due to space restrictions in the carpentry house. If you are interested and the group is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted as space becomes available.
Horticultural Group: This group works during the summer months to propagate and prepare plants for sales and the Garden. Membership in this group is limited in number due to space restrictions in the greenhouses and barn. If you are interested and the group is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted as space becomes available.
Nature & Event Photography: These volunteers photograph various aspects of The Garden and events that take place in The Garden.
Visitor Services/Front Desk/Library/Gift Shop: These volunteers assist in the various areas inside the field house.
Sunday Morning Bird Walk Leader: Lead bird watching groups through the Garden.
Friends of The Garden Board of Directors: These members are elected for a two-year term at the Annual General Meeting.
As a transaction-based board, directors are responsible for both the strategic and operational aspects of FOG. Supported by other volunteers, directors manage all of FOG's affairs as a Canadian charity and a company incorporated under provincial laws. The board meets as required between the months of September and June, either virtually or in meeting space provided by the Garden. Meetings are typically held late in the afternoon to allow for participation by the Garden's Director during their working day. Where attendance in person is not possible, technologies are used to allow for members' participation in board meetings.
The officer positions of the current Board are: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The skills and experiences of this core group is complemented by those of three to five additional Directors with special project responsibilities. Directors are elected for two-year terms. Directors serving as officers serve in these positions for at least one year or until their replacements are recruited. Descriptions of directors' roles and responsibilities are available from FOG's current Secretary by contacting fog@mun.ca.
