Access and Safety

The SDH has a 1700 sq. ft co-working space in the S. J. Carew (Engineering) Building in EN-1040. The SDH Lab is open to all students working on undergraduate or graduate competitions, or developing products. Established teams can book the space after open hours for team meetings and will have access to a projector with an AV setup.

Lab Layout

Access to the SDH collaborative space requires the completion of the SDH Lab Safety Module. Please click here to register for the lab safety training.

You may book space in the lab using the online booking tool, Skedda.

Day Access

Regular Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Anyone may come and make use of the space as long as they have completed the Online safety training modules on brightspace. All students who enter the SDH will be required to "sign in". A sign in sheet will be posted at the entrance to the room and will be kept for contact tracing purposes.

Spaces will be available on a booking basis. Students can register and book the space on Skedda, an online booking platform. Click here to register for Skedda and book time for your project. The Student Design Hub will host all events in EN1040 following launch. Events will be advertised on the SDH public calendar (and all spaces in EN1040 will be marked as busy during scheduled events).

This space is considered to be "Student Owned" and using the space has the following expectations:

  • Other's projects are not to be touched or tampered with
  • Any safety concerns are to be reported immediately
  • This is a shared, inclusive space; no bullying or harassment of any kind will be tolerated.
  • The space is to be left in the same condition as found. Students will return all tools and assets to where they were initially stored.
  • Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves. Garbage and debris should be disposed of properly.
  • Equipment is not to be used for anything other than the intended purpose
  • No food or drink
  • The SDH is not a study space; it is a collaboration and prototyping space. Students occupying SDH spaces to study will be told to leave

WHIMIS & Memorial Lab Safety

Due to the nature of the Student Design Hub project, students may require chemicals in some restricted applications. As part of lab safety requirements, students must complete Science SC 1807 - Safety in Science Lab (Lab Safety) and SC 1808 - WHMIS. These courses are offered for free through brightspace, and can be registered for through self service. Courses will be added to your brightspace within six hours. For more information, click here.

After Hours Access

At 4:00 p.m. the lab doors will be closed and all students will be asked to leave. To access the space outside of office hours, you must be a member of a student team who has been given approval to access the space. This permission will be given on a case-by-case basis. All team members must be registered in Skedda, and must complete the brightspace lab safety program.

Students given after-hours scan card access will act as the safety coordinator for their team during after-hours activities and will be responsible for enforcing all lab safety protocols in the space. Students given access must be present the entire time the room is in use.
