2016: Successful Ph.D. Defense
Lab member and new Doctor, Kirk Luther successfully defended his Ph.D. work on the use of sketching to assist investigative interviewers. Kirk expertly answered all of the examiners' questions, and wasn't sketchy in his answers!

2016: Psychology Research Day
The lab received quite a haul on Memorial University of Newfoundland's Psychology Research Day in 2016. Graduate student Zak Keeping won the award for best talk (Don't Stop Believin': Factors that Influence Alibi Believability) and Brent Snook won the Rennie Gaulton Award for Excellence in Teaching.

2015: SSHRC
Congrats to Zak Keeping, who was awarded CGS Master's Funding from SSHRC to conduct research on Behavioural Nudging and Investigative Interviewing.

2014: University Medal for Excellence in a Thesis-Based Master's Program
Congratulations to Kirk Luther who was awarded the University Medal for Excellence in a Thesis-Based Master's Program! This medal is awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies to a Master's candidate who has demonstrated excellence in the production of a thesis. Only one medal may be awarded in each academic year.
2014: 3MT - Eastern Regional Competition

Nature of the Competition

The 3MT concept has had widespread international popularity since it was developed by the University of Queensland in 2008. One take. One static slide. No props.
2013: 3MT @ Memorial University
Congratulations to Kirk Luther who was awarded top prize in MUN's first 3MT competition. The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed in 2008 by The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia. Research students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance.
3MT is not an exercise in trivialising or 'dumbing-down' research, but challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

2013: SSHRC Storytellers
Kirk Luther submitted a video entry into the newly launched SSHRC competition titled Research for a Better Life: The Storytellers. His video submission tells the story of his research which studies youth and the criminal justice system - specifically, how well youth can understand their legal rights. Kirk was one of 25 winners from across Canada to win this competition.

Kirk presented his research in Victoria, BC at Congress 2013, and was one of five winners selected to present his research at the World Social Science Forum in Montreal.

June 2009: Inspector John C. House Appointed To The Order of Merit of the Police Forces
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, presented the insignia of Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces to Inspector John Clifton House, M.O.M., from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, St. John’s.

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces honours a career of exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by the men and women of the Canadian Police Services, and recognizes their commitment to this country. The primary focus is on exceptional merit, contributions to policing and community development.

Yvette & Paul Gendreau
Paul Gendreau has made seminal contributions to correctional theory and practice that have had an impact on criminal justice systems around the world. A psychologist and professor emeritus at the University of New Brunswick, he has used evidence-based research to develop rehabilitation programs for offenders. A highly sought-after consultant and advisor, he has shared his broad knowledge with government agencies, private sector organizations and universities across North America and in England, Australasia and Jamaica. He has also earned accolades as an educator who has influenced a generation of criminology and psychology students and inspired them to become leaders in their field.
The Order of Canada Medal
Civilian honour awarded in Canada. Established in 1967, the award is administered by the Governor General with the assistance of an advisory council and is granted to 'Canadian citizens for outstanding achievement and service to the country or to humanity at large.' Any living Canadian may be nominated for membership by any other Canadian.
Initially a member of the Order either was made a Companion (CC, limited to 165 living persons at any given time) or was awarded the Medal of Service. Companions of the Order of Canada honours are awarded for service with the highest degree of merit to Canada and to humanity. Recipients may also be named to the rank of Companion in recognition of extraordinary achievement in their field of endeavour. In 1972 holders of the Medal of Service took the newly created rank of Officer (OC), and a third level, Member (CM), was introduced. Up to 64 appointments can be made to the rank of Officer every year compared with 136 to the rank of Member. By May 2004 more than 250 Canadians had been honoured for achievement in the field of music or in support of musical activity. In the following list, the year of appointment is given after the name. A date range is given for the first award to those persons who have later been elevated within the ranks of the Order. Many of the recipients of the Order of Canada listed have individual entries in EMC.
